On May 4, 2012, the Howard County Arts Council opens two new exhibits: Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2012 and Elements Within: Brenda Townsend-Kollman & Michael Spears.

2012 marks the 28th year of the Resident Visual Artists Exhibit at the Howard County Arts Council. In Gallery I, the exhibit features recent work created by artists who have studios at HCCA: James Adkins, Joan Bevelaqua, Carolyn Cates, Art Landerman, Diana Marta, Heidi Praff, Myungsook Ryu Kim, Jereme Scott, Leora “Lee” Smith, Alice St. Germain-Gray, Andrei Trach, Jamie Travers, Mary Jo Tydlacka, and David Zuccarini. The artists work in a variety of media including oil and watercolor painting, drawing, and glass bead-making.

Elements Within: Brenda Townsend-Kollman & Michael Spears. Gallery II includes a ceramicist and a painter who ask the viewer to consider what lies within both the work and themselves. In her Raku boxes Brenda Townsend-Kollman uses texture, asymmetry and Asian aesthetic and calligraphy to draw “attention to the worlds of symbol and sign, the seen and unseen, and the spoken and silent flows of language.” Michael Spears uses watercolor, ink, charcoal and other media in his melodic, abstract paintings “intended to provoke [the viewer’s] imagination and challenge the viewer’s intuitive nature.”

A free reception for both exhibits will be held on Thursday, June 21, from 6–8 p.m. The resident artists will open their studios for visitors from 7–8 p.m. In participation with Columbia Festival of the Arts, All County Improv and What Improv Group will perform in the black box theatre from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Both exhibits run through June 22, 2012.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Sunday 12 – 4 p.m. The Galleries are closed Memorial Day Monday, May 28, 2012.
