The Children's Playhouse of Maryland, Inc., in residence on the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, will perform Disney's Mulan, Jr. 1 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, March 5-6, 12-13, 19 and 20, with an additional 4 p.m. performance on Sunday, March 13, in the J Building Lecture Hall (J-137), CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for birthday parties or scout troops, and are available in advance by calling the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787) weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm; tickets are also available at the door, space permitting.
Mulan, Jr. is a based on the 1998 Disney animated film Mulan and the story "Fa Mulan" by Robert D. San Souci. The play has music and lyrics by David Zippel, Jeanine Tesori, Stephen Schwartz, Matthew Wilder, and Alexa Junge. Patricia Cotter adapted the book for the stage.
Set in ancient China during the Hun invasion, the musical tells the story of the tomboy Mulan, who disguises herself as a soldier to save her aged father from having to fight in the war. The Ancestors send the mischievous dragon Mushu to protect Mulan and help her on her journey. Together with Captain Shang and his ragtag army, they must try to save the Emperor. This tale of honor, filled with sidesplitting humor and such favorite songs as "Reflection," and "I'll Make a Man Out of You", will warm your heart and have you cheering.
The CPM production features more than 35 student actors from Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County and Harford County. Liz Boyer Hunnicutt directs and Julie Parrish is musical director.
Caroline Halligan of Baltimore appears in the title role of Mulan, with Joey Bird of Phoenix as Shang, Zoe Feldman of Baltimore as Mushu, and Victoria Caldwell of Joppa, Carrianne Cicero of Street, Isabel Gordon of Towson, Autumn Simpson of Millersville, and Peggy Smith of Towson are cast as the Ancestors.
